Paul discusses putting on the full Armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-17. These verses are so important because they hold God’s promises for our protection and victory. We have the Shield of Faith which is our first line of defense. We have the Belt of Truth which allows us to walk in our true identity in Christ. We have the Breastplate of Righteousness which protects our hearts. We have the Gospel Shoes of Peace which allows us to walk in peace no matter the difficult circumstances or difficult people in our path. We also have the Sword of the Spirit which empowers us to take down the enemy with the promises found in God’s Word, the Bible, and the promises the Holy Spirit gives us personally.
“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them” (Genesis 3.21 NIV).
The Belt of Truth helps us to walk freely in Christ. In ancient times, the belt or girdle would fasten around the waist and hip, bringing all other garments together, so the wearer could move freely without worry of clothing tripping him or her up. When wearing armor, the belt also kept the breastplate in place and was where the sword hung when not in use. Walking in truth gives us freedom to live in God’s highest intention for us. We can walk confidently knowing we won’t get tangled in our clothing and our swords and breastplates are at the ready.
“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming” (Ephesians 4.14 NIV).
In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve sinned and were ashamed of their nakedness. God clothed them, and now our humanity can be seen in the metaphor of clothing that we must wear. Our humanity is imperfect and flaps around in the wind according to our current mood, thoughts and circumstances; so we must cover our clothes with the tight-fitting Belt of Truth. The Belt of Truth fixes over our wayward human notions and actions by securing them with Truth from God’s Word. In the time of the Book of Judges, the people had no king, and they didn’t follow God’s commands. They did what was right in their own eyes, which led to disaster and heartache. They followed the whims of their humanity and not the compass of an all-knowing God.
“In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes” (Judges 21.25 NLT).
Without this compass of Truth in our lives, we would walk according to our own understanding and the ever-changing ways of the world, which ultimately leads to death. But walking with the Belt of Truth harnessing our imperfect humanity leads to life.
“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8.13 NIV).
Our enemy, the Devil, is the ultimate liar (John 8.44). He will distort truth in order to trip us up. He does not want us to fulfill our destiny and become the best version of ourselves. When we get caught in his web of lies, we struggle to be used by God. We lose our peace, our focus, our joy and our walk of faith staggers and maybe even stops. The best way to fight against these lies is to know God’s Truth found in His Word. The more we read and meditate on the Bible, the stronger our Belt of Truth becomes, allowing us to move quicker and more effectively in the freedom we have in Christ.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5.1 NIV),
When the enemy tries to lie to us, we must instantly rebuke that lie with God’s Truth, so that lie doesn’t take a stronghold in our hearts and minds. Truth will save us from being distracted, disoriented, disillusioned and dissuaded in our destiny. We will be steadfast children of God and not tossed about by our human notions of truth when we lean into the Word of God.
