Jumping into Faith
Remember as a little kid during the summer, you stood on the diving board staring down at the translucent water. You could see all the way down to the bottom of the 8-foot pool, and your young mind said, “This isn’t possible. If you jump, you will fall and hurt yourself.” However, your family and friends coaxed in reassuring voices, “It’s okay! Just jump!”
And as you hovered over the water, your mind tried to reason. But, really, there is no reasoning when it comes to jumping into water. You have to trust that it will catch you–though, in the natural, it seems impossible. The more you wait, the more you hesitate and the greater chance you will turn away and walk slowly back to the ladder where it is safe.
The same is true for faith. God calls you to do something, to go somewhere — to make a choice to follow His promptings. And if you reason, you will psyche yourself out of obeying. In this moment, reasoning is the killer of faith. Not to say that God isn’t a God of order, but His order is greater than the order of the world’s systems. His plan usurps even the most basic principles of our reality on earth. If He calls, He will provide.
Instead of trying to reason with human understanding, we can claim these five promises of God in His Word. They will fuel our faith, so we can finally take the leap into the great unknown, trusting that the Living Water of God’s provision will catch us. And once we dive in, we will jump again with greater confidence. When we experience God “Catching” our leap of faith, we will live out a lifestyle of trusting, obeying and jumping when He leads.
The following are five promises to help you when your faith is wavering. Instead of reasoning, repeat them over and over again until they become absorbed into your mind, heart and, finally, your actions. Trust that the Living Water will catch you when you take a leap of faith.
Verse 1 to Boost Your Faith:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55.8-9 (NIV).
God’s thoughts and ways are many times beyond our understanding. We can align our thoughts with His as much as possible, but eventually a choice of faith will have to be made. This choice to trust God despite what our earthly eyes can discern proves that we believe God more than we believe our circumstances.
Verse 2 to Boost Your Faith:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11.1 (NIV)
Faith is a normal part of living for God. If there isn’t something we are hoping and trusting for that seems impossible in the natural, we are not truly walking in the fullness of our destiny. Faith pleases God (Hebrews 11.6). And those who hope in God will not be put to shame (Psalm 25.3).
